Wings Like a Dove - Psalms 55:6

In Psalms chapter fifty five David said, “My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me. Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror has overwhelmed me”, and in chapter fifty-five and verse six of Psalms David said, “O that I had wings like a dove”, where we read,

And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.

The verse begins, And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove!” David began with the words, “and I said” or “and I, David, uttered, declared and proclaimed” “O that I had wings” which means “O that I, David, possessed pinions and quilled feathers” “like a dove” or “similar and in likeness to a small bird such as a dove or pigeon”. David said that he desired to have quilled feathers like the small bird known as a dove.

The verse goes on to say,for then would I fly away, and be at rest.” David continued with the words, “for then would I fly away” or “because, since and on account that at that time I, David, would brandish, flee and fade separate and apart”, “and be at rest” which means “and exist as settled down, established, set and fixed”. David said if he had “wings like a dove” he would flee from his situation and be settled down in an established place.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how David desired to escape from his current situation and location. Rather than continue where he was, he wanted to get away. Most of us know this feeling. We think if we could just “get away” from everything, we would be better off. God knows our emotions, and there is no better refuge in which to hide than in Him. God sent His Son Jesus to be crucified on the cross for our sins and the sins of the world. As long as we are in the world, we will suffer difficulties and scary situations, however, when we yield to Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He becomes the best place of refuge where we may flee, and we will have no need for “wings” to “be at rest” with Him. (See Matthew 11:28)

Next time David says, “then would I wander far off”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
