In Psalms chapter fifty three David said, “The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that does good. God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God”, and in chapter fifty-three and verse three of Psalms David said, “every one of them is gone back”, where we read,
Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy;
there is none that does good, no, not one.
The verse begins, “Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy;” David began with the words, “every one of them” or “each, the whole and all of the people who are corrupt and have done abominable iniquity” “is gone back” which means “has backslid, proved recreant and repulsed”: “they are altogether” or “every one of the people who are corrupt and have done abominable iniquity” “become filthy” which means “are morally muddled, been tainted and turned sour”. David said everyone of the people who are corrupt and have done abominable iniquity has backslid, are tainted and soured.
The verse goes on to say, “there is none that does good, no, not one.” David continued with the words, “there is none” or “there exists not one person” “that does good” which means “who performs, makes ready and produces pleasantness, agreeableness and excellence”, “no, not one” or “not in any way or manner a single person whether male or female”. David said not one person was found to be doing pleasant, agreeable and excellent acts and deeds.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see through David what Jehovah God saw as He looked down upon people. Everyone was backslid, tainted, soured and performed no pleasant and agreeable act whatsoever. Paul the apostle repeated this idea when he wrote, “there is none righteous, no, not one”, (Romans 3:10) and he reemphasized his point when he said, “for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God”. (See Romans 3:23) Many people consider themselves righteous because they compare themselves to others, and the behavior of other people becomes their standard. However, Jesus is perfect, and He is the One to whom we must compare. This makes all people guilty of missing the mark or sinful before God. Sin separates us from a relationship with God, and God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of every person. Indeed there is no one who is righteous, and everyone is in need of a “Savior”. Jesus invites us to believe and trust in Him, and He will forgive our sins and grant us everlasting life with Him when we accept His invitation.
Next time David asks, “Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
