In Psalms chapter forty nine David said, “Be not you afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased. For when he dies he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him. Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise you, when you do well to yourself. He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light”, and in chapter forty nine and verse twenty of Psalms David shared about, “man that is in honor, and understands not” where we read,
Man that is in honor, and understands not, is like the beasts that perish.
The verse begins, “Man that is in honor, and understands not, ...” David began with the words, “Man that is in honor” or “man, a human being whether male or female, who is valued, precious and lives in splendor and pomp”, “and understands not” which means “and doesn't perceive, discern, consider or know” that they shall go to the generation of his father are as the following. David referred to a person who is valued, precious and in splendor but in no way perceives or considers that they shall go to the generations of their fathers, and they are like the following.
The verse continues, “... is like the beasts that perish.” David added the words, “is like the beasts” or “is similar to and in likeness to cattle, animals and livestock” “that perish” which means “which cease, are brought to silence, destroyed and cut down”. David referred to people who are valued, precious and live in splendor but do not understand they shall go to the generation of their fathers are like animals that are destroyed and cut down.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how David mentioned how people who are valued and precious often do not perceive that they shall go to the generation of their fathers, and are therefore like the animals that are destroyed and cut down. They think they shall simply be put to silence when they die. However, the Bible tells us something different. The Bible says the spirit of people lives on after death in this life, and that people will spend eternity with or without God. (See Ecclesiastes 12:7; 2 Corinthians 5:6-8: Philippians 1:21-24 and Luke 23:46) Anyone who surrenders to God's Son Jesus as their “Savior and Lord” will inherit eternal life with Him because their sins are forgiven and separation from God is removed. God knew we needed Jesus because we are not like the “beasts that perish” but will spend eternity either in God's presence or forever separated from Him.
Next time we begin a new chapter and see Asaph say, “The mighty God, even the LORD, has spoken”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
