The Fool Says No God - Psalms 53:1

Psalms chapter fifty three begins with the heading, “[[To the chief Musician upon Mahalath, Maschil, A Psalm of David.]]” which breaks down, “to the chief Musician” or “to the preeminent, overseeing superintendent or chief choir director” “upon Mahalath” which means “sickness and was probably the title of a popular song”, “Maschil” or “a song or poem of contemplation”, “a Psalm” which means “a poem or melody set to notes” “of David” or “belonging to David whose name means blessed and was the second king of Israel”, and in chapter fifty-three and verse one of Psalms David said, “The fool has said in his heart, There is no God”, where we read,

The fool has said in his heart, There is no God.

Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that does good.

The verse begins, The fool has said in his heart, There is no God.” David began with the words, “the fool” or “the senseless, stupid, impious and vile person” “has said” which means “spoke, uttered, boasted, thought, avowed and avouched” “in his heart” or “within the senseless person's inner man, mind, will, understanding, soul, knowledge, thinking, reflection, memory, inclination, resolution, determination, conscience and seat of emotions and passions”, “there is no God” which means “nothing, without, lack, nought and never a Divine judge, ruler or Supreme God”. David said the senseless person determines within their soul to answer “no” to the Divine ruler Jehovah God.

The verse goes on to say,Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that does good.” David continued with the words, “corrupt are they” or “destroyed, ruined, decayed and spoiled exists the fools”, “and have done abominable iniquity” which means “and have performed, made ready and produced detestable, loathing and abhorred injustice, unrighteousness, wrong and violent deeds”: “there is none” or “there exists not one person” “that does good” which means “who fashions, accomplishes, performs, makes ready and produces agreeable, pleasant, excellent, rich and valuable works and deeds”. David declared the senseless people who say no to God to be ruined and decayed because they produced unrighteous and violent deeds. David also said “no one” performs agreeable and pleasant acts.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how David referred to people who are senseless, spiritually stupid, impious and vile because they declare not only that there is “no God”, but also respond to Him with a negative answer. The “there is” is in italics and is added by the interpreters of the scripture in this verse, and it actually reads, “the fool has said in his heart, no God”. The important thing to remember is that regardless of the belief or response of the vile in heart, God does exist and only a foolish person says “no” to Him. Paul the apostle wrote, “there is none righteous, no, not one”, (See Romans 3:10), and “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God”. (See Romans 3:23) God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on a cross for the sins of all mankind. He raised Him from the dead three days later, and Jesus is alive as the “Savior and Lord” of the world today. Anyone who surrenders to Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God, and those who are wise are not like the “fool” who does not believe or receive His invitation to be saved and redeemed.

Next time David tells how, “God looked down from heaven upon the children of men”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
