Not Making God Your Strength - Psalms 52:7

In Psalms chapter fifty two David said to the wicked, “God shall likewise destroy you for ever, he shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah. The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him”, and in chapter fifty-two and verse seven of Psalms David shared how the righteous say, “this is the man that made not God his strength”, where we read,

Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength;

but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

The verse begins, Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength;” David began with the words, “Lo, this is the man” or “look, behold and consider, this is the person who boasts in his mighty works” “that made not God” which means “who did not put, place, set or appoint the Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God” “his strength” or “his, the person who boasts in their mischief's, safety, protection, refuge, harbor and stronghold”. David called upon his readers and listeners to consider that the person who boasts in their mischief in no way set or appointed the Divine judge Jehovah God as their safety, protection and stronghold.

The verse continues,but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.” David added the words, “but trusted” or “but were confident, safe and secure” “in the abundance of his riches” which means “within the multitude, greatness and numerous wealth and financial condition”, “and strengthened himself” or “and prevailed, made firm and hardened his own self” “in his wickedness” which means “within his engulfing ruin, destruction and calamity”. David said the person who boasted in their mischief put their faith and confidence within the multitude of their wealthy condition, and they made themselves strong in their engulfing ruin and calamitous acts and deeds.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through David how the person who boasts in their mischief does not rely upon, cling to or trust in Jehovah God for their strength. They have confidence in their abundant “riches” and evil doings. They forget one thing. God owns everything, and He is all powerful. God gives them their gifts and abundance, and any “strength” they have gained while living comes from Him as well. All “wealth” will be left and all strength will be diminished when they leave this earth. Only a relationship with Jesus will last beyond this life, and when we put our faith and trust in Him, we will be forgiven of our sins and granted everlasting life with God. Let us place our trust in Jesus Christ who gave His life for ours on the cross so we might obtain “true riches” that last forever and ever.

Next time David says, “I am like a green olive tree in the house of God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
