Against God Only Have I Sinned - Psalms 51:4

In Psalms chapter fifty one David said, “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to your lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of your tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me”, and in chapter fifty-one and verse four of Psalms David told God, “Against you, you only, have I sinned”, where we read,

Against you, you only, have I sinned, and done this evil in your sight:

that you might be justified when you speak, and be clear when you judge.

The verse begins, Against you, you only, have I sinned, and done this evil in your sight:” David began with the words, “Against you” or “in opposition to you, Jehovah God”, “you only” which means “you, Jehovah God, solely and alone”, “have I sinned” or “have I, David, missed the way, went wrong, incurred guilt and forfeited purity from uncleanness”, “and done this evil” which means “and fashioned, accomplished, produced and made this bad, disagreeableness, malignity and unpleasantness” “in your sight” or “within your, Jehovah God's, eye or mental and spiritual faculties”. David shared that in opposition to Jehovah God alone he committed his error and produced malignant wickedness before His eyes.

The verse goes on to say, that you might be justified when you speak, and be clear when you judge.” David continued with the words, “that you might be justified” or “so you, Jehovah God, have a just cause, are in the right and vindicated” “when you speak” which means “at the time and moment you, Jehovah God, utter, declare and proclaim”, “and be clear” or “and are pure, justified and innocent” “when you judge” which means “at the time and moment you, Jehovah God, govern, rule and execute judgment”. David declared the rightness of the vindication of Jehovah God at the time He makes a proclamation, and He is justified and pure at the time He passes judgement.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how David knew ultimately his “sin” and “transgression” was against Jehovah God. Although people were involved in David's wrong, Jehovah God was the One he truly violated. God is righteous, pure, innocent and perfect, and when He judges “sin” He does so in a just manner. He poured out His judgment upon Jesus as He died upon the cross for the sins of all mankind, and although we should have received the punishment for our sins, Jesus took our place. God is willing to forgive everyone who commits themselves to His Son Jesus, and He promises everlasting life to everyone who believes. God is “justified” when He “speaks”, and He is “clear” or “pure” when He judges. Only those who receive the substitutional judgment that He poured out upon Jesus will be “cleansed” from their sins, and all others will stand before Jehovah God to account for themselves.

Next time David says, “Behold, I was shaped in iniquity”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
