In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph said Jehovah God, “established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse seven of Psalms Asaph shared these things so, “they might set their hope in God” where we read,
That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:
The verse begins, “That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, ...” Asaph began with the words, “that they might set their hope” or “so the people of Jacob and Israel may place, put, appoint and direct their, the people of Jacob and Israel's, expectation, confidence and trust” “in God” which means “within the Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God”, “and not forget” or “and not in any way ignore, cease to care about and mislay” “the works of God” which means “the deeds, practices and acts belonging to the Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God”. Asaph said when the witness and law of Jehovah God were passed down from generation to generation the people of Jacob and Israel would place their expectation and trust in the Divine judge Jehovah God and not ignore His acts and deeds.
The verse continues, “... but keep his commandments:” Asaph added the words, “but keep” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover guard, watch over and preserve” “his commandments” which means “his, Jehovah God's, ordinances, precepts and law”. Asaph said people would watch over and preserve the ordinances and precepts of Jehovah God when they were passed down to every succeeding generation.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Asaph knew the passing along of God's witness and law to future generations would insure that they would place their expectation in Jehovah God, and they would in no way cease to remember His acts and deeds. They would also observe His ordinances in the manner that God desires. God wants to have a personal relationship with us, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross because our sins separated us from Him. When we believe and trust in Jesus, we will be forgiven and inherit everlasting life. We are to give instruction concerning the witness and law of God to future generations, so they too will put their “hope” in Him, not ignore God's “works”, and observe His commandments all the days of our lives.
Next time Asaph shares these things so they, “might not be as their fathers”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
