In Psalms chapter eighty three Asaph referred to, “The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes. Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre”, and in chapter eighty three and verse eight of Psalms Asaph shared how, “Assur also is joined with them”, where we read,
Assur also is joined with them: they have helped the children of Lot. Selah.
The verse begins, “Assur also is joined with them:” Asaph began with the word, “Assur” whose ame means “a step” and was “the second son of Shem, eponymous ancestor of the Assyrians” “also is joined with them” which means even so and indeed exists as alongside and abides with the other enemies of Jehovah God and the people of Israel”. Asaph shared how “Assur” or modern day Iraq was also among the enemies of Jehovah God and the people of Israel.
The verse continues, “they have helped the children of Lot. Selah.” Asaph added the words, “they have helped” or “the people in Assur allied with the offspring and progeny of Lot whose name means covering and was son of Haran and Abraham's nephew who settled in Sodom and was delivered from its destruction by God” “the children of Lot” which means “the offspring and progeny belonging to Lot”. “Selah” or “uplift, exalt and pause to meditate upon it”. Asaph shared how the people of “Assur” were allies with the people of “Lot” who were from the destroyed land of Sodom and Gomorrah, and he wanted his readers and listeners to pause and meditate upon this idea.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see Asaph continue to list the countries surrounding Israel who were their enemies and the enemies of Jehovah God. This is not the way God wanted things to be. He loves everyone, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of every person regardless of where they are in the world. “God so love the world, that He sent His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life” (See John 3:16). He invites everyone to surrender to Jesus to be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with Him. Even through people are in opposition to Him and His people, He will receive them when they humble themselves, repent of their sins and allow Him to wash and cleanse them from their sins through belief and faith in His Son Jesus.
Next time Asaph says, “do unto them as unto the Midianites”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
