In Psalms chapter eighty one Asaph shared how Jehovah God said, “I removed his shoulder from the burden: his hands were delivered from the pots”, and in chapter eighty one and verse seven of Psalms Asaph shared how Jehovah God said, “you called in trouble, and I delivered you”, where we read,
You called in trouble, and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder:
I proved you at the waters of Meribah. Selah.
The verse begins, “You called in trouble, and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder: ” Asaph began with the words, “You called in trouble” or “you, the people of Israel, cried out, shouted aloud and summoned in straits, distress and vexation”, “and I delivered you” which means “and I, Jehovah God, rescued, saved and liberated you, people of Israel”; “I answered you” or “I, Jehovah God, responded and testified to you, the people of Israel” “in the secret place” which means “within the covering, shelter and hiding location” “of thunder” or “pertaining to a thundercloud”. Asaph shared how Jehovah God rescued the people of Israel from Egypt when they cried out to Him while they were distress, and they encountered the covering of the mighty thundercloud. (See Exodus 20:18)
The verse continues, “I proved you at the waters of Meribah. Selah.” Asaph added the words, “I proved you” or “I, Jehovah God, tried, examined and scrutinized you, the people of Israel” “at the waters” which means “at the flowing water” “of Meribah” or “belonging to Meribah whose name means strife or contention and was a fountain at Rephidim in the desert of Sin; it was called this because the Israelites murmured against God”. (See Exodus 14:30-31; 17:2-7; 20:18-21) “Selah” which means “exalt, lift up and pause to meditate upon it”. Asaph wanted his readers and listeners to pause and meditate upon the idea of Jehovah God examining the people of Israel when they murmured at the rock of “Meribah”.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how Asaph remembered the time when Jehovah God rescued the people of Israel when they were vexed and cried out to Him. He spoke in the thundercloud, and the people of Israel were tested at the rock of “Meribah”. God was for the people of Israel because He loved them, and He loves us. He proved His love for us when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and rescue us when we are in distress and have our faith examine by Him.
Next time Asaph shares how Jehovah God says, “hear, O my people, and I will testify unto you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
