Put Your Feet on Their Necks - Joshua 10:24

In the book of Joshua, we learned about Israel fighting the five kings of the Amorites who fled from the army of Israel and hid in a cave, and “then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave. And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon”, and in chapter ten and verse twenty-four of the book of Joshua, we learn how Joshua told his men, “Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings” where we read,

And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

The verse reads, “And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and it came to pass” which means “and it happened and occurred”, “when they brought out those kings” or “at the time and moment they, Joshua’s men, carried and lead forth the five royal rulers and leaders of the Amorites” “unto Joshua” which means “to Joshua whose name means Jehovah is salvation”, “that Joshua” or “that Joshua whose name means Jehovah is salvation” “called for all the men of Israel” which means “beckoned, summoned and cried out to each, every, the whole and everyone of the male human beings belonging to Israel whose name means God prevails and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob”. Joshua or the writer shared at the time and moment “Joshua’s” men carried the “five” royal rulers of the “Amorites” to “Joshua” from the “cave” where they were concealed, he summoned every one of the male human beings belonging to “Israel”

The verse continues, “…  and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.” Joshua or the writer added the words, “and said unto the captains”  which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to the chiefs, commanders, rulers and leaders” “of the men of war” or “belonging to the male human beings pertaining to fighting and battle” “which went with him” which means “who left and departed alongside and accompanying him, Joshua”, “Come near” or “approach and make ready”, “put your feet upon the necks” which means “place, set and lay your, the captain’s, physical feet on the physical necks” “of these kings” or “belonging to the five royal rulers belonging to the Amorites”. “And they came near” which means “and they, the captains, approached and made ready” “and put their feet” or “and placed, set and laid their physical feet” “upon the necks of them” which means “on the physical necks of them, the five kings of the Amorites”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Joshua” ordered the “captains” or leaders of the army of Israel to put their “feet” upon the “necks” of the five royal rulers of the Amorites, and they obeyed his command.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how “Joshua” summoned every one of the “men of Israel” to approach him, and when they came, he ordered the leaders of the army to place their physical “feet” on the “necks” of the “five kings”. This would not only humiliate these “kings” from “Joshua”, but it would also rid “Israel” of these leaders’ pernicious ways. In Genesis chapter three and verse fifteen God said to Satan, “and I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it shall bruise you head, and you shall bruise his heel”, and God fulfilled this prophecy when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the grave after three days. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us who will guide us into all truth and teach us how to put our “feet” upon the enemy who desires to destroy us. (See Genesis 3:15; John 3:16; 16:13)

Next time we learn how Joshua says, “Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
