The Sons of Benjamin - Nehemiah 11:7

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, All the sons of Perez that dwelt at Jerusalem were four hundred threescore and eight valiant men”, and in chapter eleven and verse seven of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “these are the sons of Benjamin” where we read,

And these are the sons of Benjamin; Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Joed, the son of Pedaiah, the son of Kolaiah, the son of Maaseiah, the son of Ithiel, the son of Jesaiah.

The verse reads, And these are the sons of Benjamin; Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Joed, the son of Pedaiah, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “and these are the sons of Benjamin” which means “and the following exist as the male offspring and progeny belonging to Benjamin whose name means son of the right hand”; “Sallu” or Salu or Sallai whose name means “weighed” “the son of Meshullam” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Meshullam whose name means friend”, “the son of Joed” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Joed whose name means Jehovah is witness”, “the son of Pedaiah” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Pedaiah whose name means Jehovah has ransomed”. Nehemiah shared how the male offspring whose ancestors' names mean, “weighed, friend, Jehovah is witness and Jehovah has ransomed” were among the people of “Benjamin” who lived in Jerusalem.

The verse goes on to say, “... the son of Kolaiah, the son of Maaseiah, the son of Ithiel, the son of Jesaiah.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “the son of Kolaiah” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Kolaiah whose name means voice of Jehovah”, “the son of Maaseiah” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Maaseiah whose name means work of Jehovah”, “the son of Ithiel” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Ithiel whose name means God is with me”, “the son of Jesaiah” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Jesaiah whose name means Jehovah has saved”. Nehemiah shared how the male offspring who were ancestors of “Benjamin”whose names mean “voice of Jehovah, work of Jehovah, God is with me and Jehovah has saved” were among the men who inhabited Jerusalem.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah about the men of “Benjamin” who lived within Jerusalem. The names of their heritage were mighty as they depicted the character of God. “Weighed, friend, Jehovah is witness, Jehovah has ransomed, voice of Jehovah, work of Jehovah, God is with me and God has saved” were among the ancestors of these men. God wants us to know Him, and we begin a relationship with Him when we surrender to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins and was raised from the grave three days later. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us so we also may join Him in Heaven for all eternity.

Next time Nehemiah says, “after him Gabbai, Sallai”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
