If You Show the Dream - Daniel 2:6

In the book of Daniel, Daniel said, in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him. Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to show the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king. And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream. Then spoke the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live for ever: tell your servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation. The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if you will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, you shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill”, and in Daniel chapter two and verse six Daniel shared how Nebuchadnezzar told the Chaldeans what would happen, “if you show the dream” where we read,

But if you show the dream, and the interpretation thereof, you shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honor: therefore show me the dream, and the interpretation thereof.

The verse reads, But if you show the dream, and the interpretation thereof, you shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honor:” Daniel began with the words, “but if you show the dream” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover whether and in case you, magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, declare, inform and reveal the mental imagery”, “and the interpretation thereof” or “and the rendering and meaning of the dream”, “you shall receive of me gifts” which means “you, magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, will acquire from me, Nebuchadnezzar, endowments” “and rewards” or “wages, payment and blessings” “and great honor” which means “and exceedingly abundant esteem and glory”. Daniel shared how Nebuchadnezzar said if the “magicians, the astrologers, the sorcerers and the Chaldeans” revealed his “dream” and the meaning of it, they would acquire endowments, blessings and abundant glory from him.

The verse continues, therefore show me the dream, and the interpretation thereof.” Daniel added the words, “therefore show me the dream” which means wherefore, then and on this account reveal the mental imagery to me, Nebuchadnezzar” “and the interpretation thereof” or “and the rendering and meaning of the dream”. Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar concluded that the “magicians, and the astrologers, the sorcerers and the Chaldeans” should reveal the mental imagery to him along with what it meant.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Daniel how King Nebuchadnezzar offered “gifts, rewards and honor” to the “magicians, the astrologers, the sorcerers and the Chaldeans” if they revealed his “dream”and the meaning of it to him. He thought this should motivate them to tell him what the “dream” was, so he ordered them to speak. We shall see how they respond, but let us keep in mind that God knew the answers all along. God had a plan for the salvation of mankind through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of everyone, and when He raised Him from the dead after three days, He made the way for us to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and provided with the gift of His Holy Spirit who will help us know that He is at work at all times when we believe and trust in Him.

Next time Daniel shares how the Chaldeans tell King Nebuchadnezzar, “let the king tell his servants”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
