In the book of Daniel, Daniel said, “in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams” and his servants said, “tell your servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation. The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if you will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, you shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill. But if you show the dream, and the interpretation thereof, you shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honor: therefore show me the dream, and the interpretation thereof. They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation of it. The king answered and said, I know of certainty that you would gain the time, because you see the thing is gone from me”, and in Daniel chapter two and verse nine Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar told the Chaldeans, “tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can show me the interpretation thereof” where we read,
But if you will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for you have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can show me the interpretation thereof.
The verse reads, “But if you will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you:” Daniel began with the words, “but if you will not make known unto me” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover whether and in case you, magicians, the astrologers, the sorcerers and the Chaldeans, shall in no way or manner communicate inform and reveal to me, King Nebuchadnezzar” “the dream” or “the mental imagery”, “there is but one decree for you” which means “there exists no other edict, order or declaration on behalf of you, King Nebuchadnezzar”. Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar told the “magicians, the astrologers, the sorcerers and the Chaleans” that in case they were unable to reveal his dream to him, there was only one order, doom, for them.
The verse goes on to say, “for you have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed:” Daniel continued with the words, “for you have prepared lying” which means “because, since and on account that you, magicians, the astrologers, the sorcerers and the Chaldeans, have agreed together beforehand and at an appointed time to speak falsehood and lies” “and corrupt words” or “and faulty utterances, declarations and proclamations” “to speak before me” which means “to utter, declare and proclaim in front and in the presence of me, King Nebuchadnezzar”, “till the time be changed” or “until the set and appointed time is altered”. Daniel shared how King Nebuchadnezzar accused the “magicians, the astrologers, the sorcerers and the Chaldeans” of conspiring together to speak falsehoods to him until the appointed time would be altered.
Finally the verse says, “therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can show me the interpretation thereof.” Daniel concluded this verse with the words, “therefore tell me the dream” which means “wherefore, then and on this account relate and declare to me, King Nebuchadnezzar, the mental imagery”, “and I shall know” or “and I, King Nebuchadnezzar, will discern, perceive, understand and learn” “that you can show me the interpretation thereof” which means “that you, magicians, the astrologers, the sorcerers and the Chaldeans, are able to reveal, inform and declare to me, King Nebuchadnezzar, the rendering and meaning of the dream”. Daniel ended this verse by sharing how King Nebuchadnezzar again commanded the “magicians, the astrologers, the sorcerers and the Chaldeans” to reveal his “dream” to him, and then he would know they were able to disclose what the dream was along with it's meaning.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Daniel how King Nebuchadnezzar continued to appeal to the “magicians, astrologers, sorcerers and men of Chaldea” to disclose his “dream” and the “interpretation” of it to him. King Nebuchadnezzar knew his “wise men” were fraudulent and fake if they could not make these things known, and he challenged them on last time to prove him wrong. God knows everything about us, and He still loves us. He proved His love by sending His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when He raise Him from the dead, He made the way for us by believing and trusting in Him to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and given His Holy Spirit to provide gifts that will help us keep in alignment with His ways regardless of the people and circumstances that enter into our lives.
Next time Daniel shares how the Chaldeans tell King Nebuchadnezzar, “there is not a man upon the earth that can show the king's matter”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
