Gabbai and Sallai - Nehemiah 11:8

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, these are the sons of Benjamin; Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Joed, the son of Pedaiah, the son of Kolaiah, the son of Maaseiah, the son of Ithiel, the son of Jesaiah”, and in chapter eleven and verse eight of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “after him Gabbai, Sallai” where we read,

And after him Gabbai, Sallai, nine hundred twenty and eight.

The verse reads, And after him Gabbai, Sallai, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “and after him” which means “and following Jesaiah” “Gabbai” whose name means “my back”, “Sallai” or “weighed”. Nehemiah shared how the men whose names mean “my back and weighed” were also among the ancestors of the men of Benjamin who remained in Jerusalem.

The verse continues, “... nine hundred twenty and eight.” Nehemiah added the words, “nine hundred twenty and eight” which means “nine hundred and twenty eight men of Benjamin”. Nehemiah shared how there were “nine hundred and twenty eight men” belonging to the tribe of “Benjamin” who inhabited Jerusalem.

When we consider the words in this verse, we discover through Nehemiah the number of the men of “Benjamin” who lived within the city of “Jerusalem”. These mighty men, whether volunteers or chosen, were to be a part of the group of people who continued within the capital city of Israel. God invites everyone to be a part of His Kingdom, and when we yield to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the grave three days later as our “Lord and Savior”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us who shall guide us into all truth and help us live according to that truth as we remain before Him forever.

Next time Nehemiah says, “Joel the son of Zichri was their overseer”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
