The
writer of Hebrews shared about a “new and living way”
which God has “consecrated
for us” by Jesus Christ's
offering of His “flesh”,
and in chapter ten and verse twenty-one of Hebrews the writer
shares about a “high
priest” “over the house of God” where we read:
The
verse begins, “And
having
an high priest ...”. The
writer began with the words, “And
having”
which means “holding, owning and possessing” “an
high priest”
or “chief and great one who offers sacrifices and is in general
busied with sacred rites”. The writer referred to the “chief
priest” who made sacrifices and offerings to God every year among
the people.
The
verse continues, “...over the house of God;”. The
writer added the words, “over the house” or
“positioned on or above the inhabited household or building”, “of
God” which refers to “the
Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father,
Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. The “high priest”
was the main authority “over”
the sacrifices, rites and rituals of God's earthly tabernacle or
temple.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we understand the
significant role of “the high priest” over the “house
of God”. This man was to offer “sacrifices” which
would bring people into a relationship with God, and Jesus was the
“high priest” in authority “over” the “heavenly
temple” who gained our access to God. The “high priest”
on earth was the “shadow” or foreshadowing of Jesus Christ
who would offer Himself as the “sacrifice” for our sins.
Let all who read these words understand and believe in Jesus' role as
the ultimate “high priest”.
Next
time the writer tells his readers to “draw
near with a true heart in full assurance of faith”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
