God
told Abraham “in Isaac shall your seed be called”,
and therefore if Abraham sacrificed him, God would have a problem. In
chapter eleven and verse nineteen of Hebrews the writer shares
how “God was able to raise” Isaac
“up”where we read:
from
where also he received him in a figure.
The
verse begins, “Accounting
that God was
able to raise him
up, even from the dead;”. The
writer began with the word, “Accounting
that”
which means “reckoning, computing, calculating and imputing since
and because” “God”
or “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the
Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “was
able”
which means “had power, wealth, influence and strength” “to
raise him up” or
“arouse Isaac from sleep of death and recall the dead to life”
“even from”
which means “indeed and also out of, from and away from” “the
dead” or
“the deceased, departed, destitute of life, inanimate, lifeless and
breathed his last”. Abraham believed that God was able to “raise
Isaac”
from the dead if he sacrificed him.
The
verse continues, “from where also he received him in a
figure.”. The writer added the
words, “from where also” or
“from the place, source, cause and reason” “he
received him” which means
“where Abraham cared for, provided for and preserved Isaac” “in
a figure” or “in a placing
of one thing by the side of another, juxtaposition like ships in
battle; comparing one thing with another, likeness and similitude”.
The writer's idea is that Abraham would have received Isaac back to
life again even if Isaac died in the sacrifice.
When
we consider these words in Hebrews, we see the significant power of
God Almighty and His purpose to keep His word. When God proclaims a
promise, He shall fulfill it even if it means doing something
supernatural to do so. Jesus Christ promised to give “everlasting
life” to everyone who believes in Him as Savior and Lord, and
those who have “faith” like Abraham to believe in
something that seems impossible may be assured that God will do as He
promised.
Next
time the writer shares how “Isaac
blessed Jacob and Esau”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
