In
sharing about the “faith”
of Abraham, the writer of Hebrews declared, Abraham “was
called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an
inheritance”, and as he
“obeyed” even
though he did not know “where he went”.
His “faith”
journey was “in a strange country”
with “Isaac and Jacob”
his descendants also “heirs with him of the same
promise”. In chapter
eleven and verse eleven of Hebrews the writer shares
how “Sara”,
Abraham's wife, “by faith”
“received strength to conceive seed” God where we
read:
Through
faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was
delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him
faithful who had promised.
The
verse begins, “Through faith also Sara herself received
strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was
past age,...”. The writer
began with the words, “Through faith”
which means “by the conviction of the truth of anything and belief
with the predominate idea of trust (or confidence) whether in God or
in Christ which springs from trust in the same” “also
Sara herself” whose name means
“princess” and was “the wife of Abraham” “received”
which means “took, carried, procured and apprehended” “strength”
or “might, virtue, power and
ability” “to conceive”
which means “a deposition, founding, conception and foundation”,
“and was delivered”
or “given offspring, issue or seed” “of a child”
which refers to “a baby being born which is in travail”
“when she was past age”
which means “beside and beyond the normal age for having and
bringing up babies”. “Faith”
was the key component in “Sara's”
life as she “received strength”
to become pregnant and have a baby when she had passed the “age”
when women normally bear children.
The
verse goes on to say, “...because she judged him faithful
who had promised.”. The writer
continued with the word, “because” or
“since, seeing then and therefore” “she judged”
which means “counted, thought, esteemed and as having authority and
power over” “him faithful” or
“God trusty, believable, confiding and trusting” “who
had promised” which means
“God's announcement of good and blessing”. Sara “esteemed”
God who pronounced the “announcement of blessing” to Abraham and
her to be “trustworthy and believable”.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we see how “faith”
was important in “Sara's” life too. We can only imagine
how much “belief in God” it took to be ninety years old when Sara
conceived and bore “Isaac”. This, under normal
circumstances, was impossible, but all things are possible with God.
Jesus Christ came into the world to save people from their sins, and
the key component in a person's life is to have “faith” like
“Sara”. Let “Sara” be an inspiration to us, and
may God continue to be the “faithful” God to His promises
that He is.
Next
time the writer shares how Abraham's descendants shall be “so
many as the stars of the sky in multitude”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
