n
making a declaration about those who “sin willfully
after” they “have
received the knowledge of the truth”,
the writer of Hebrews shared about those who have “despised
Moses' law”. In chapter
ten and verse twenty-nine of Hebrews the writer shares
concerning “how much sorer punishment” there is for
those “who have trodden under foot the Son of God” where
we read:
Of how
much sorer punishment, suppose you, shall he be thought worthy, who
has trodden under foot the Son of God, and has counted the blood of
the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath
done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
The
verse begins, “Of
how much sorer punishment, suppose you, shall he be thought
worthy,...”. The
writer began with the words, “Of how
much sorer”
which means “how great and worse” “punishment”
or “vengeance and penalty” “suppose you” which means “do
you think, have an opinion, account and judge as in question”,
“shall he be thought worthy”
which means “the certain one think meet, fit and right or judged
worthy and deemed deserving”. The writer questioned his readers
concerning “worthiness”
of the “punishment”
for those “unworthy ones”
of whom he shall write.
The
verse continues, “...who has trodden under foot the Son
of God, and has counted the blood of the covenant,”. The
writer added the words, “who has trodden under foot” or
“who has tread down and trampled upon”, “the Son of
God” which refers to “the
Son of Almighty God who is comprised of God the Father, Christ the
Son and the Holy Spirit”,“and has counted”
means “ruled, commanded and had authority over” “the
blood” or “bloodshed” “of
the covenant” which means
“that pertains and belongs to the disposition, arrangement, compact
or testament”. The writer warned those who “trample” “the
Son of God” which refers to
Jesus who gave His “blood”
as the perfect “sacrifice”
for our sins.
Finally
the verse says, “wherewith he was
sanctified, an unholy thing, and has done despite unto the Spirit of
grace?” The
writer finished the verse with the word, “wherewith”
or “with
some of which” “he was sanctified”
or “rendered, acknowledged, venerated and hallowed separate,
consecrated and dedicated as”, “an
unholy thing”
or “something common, ordinary, general, profane and unclean”,
“and has done despite”
or “caused insult” “unto the
Spirit”
which refers to “the
third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, coequal, coeternal
with the Father and the Son”
“of grace” which
means “that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm,
loveliness and unmerited favor”. The writer questioned those whom
Jesus “sanctified”
and believe in and trust in Him, and if they engage in “ordinary
and general” things, they have “insulted” God's “unmerited
favor” toward them.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we see an austere warning to
those who “trample” “the Son of God” under their feet.
Those who engage in this manner “insult” God's Spirit, and the
writer desired to know if his readers understood what he was
declaring. Jesus died for everyone's sin, and when we believe in Him,
we obtain not only eternal life, but also a manner of living that is
pleasing to God. May all who read these words take heed.
Next
time the writer shares how God says, “vengeance
belongs unto me”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
