Jesus
did not have to “offer himself often”
according to the writer of Hebrews like the “high priest
entered into the holy place every year with the blood of others”.
Jesus went into the “holy place”
one time in heaven to offer Himself as a sacrifice for our sins. In
chapter nine and verse twenty-six of Hebrews the writer shared
how Jesus “appeared” in
heaven “to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself”
where we read:
For then
must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but
now once in the end of the world has he appeared to put away sin by
the sacrifice of himself.
The
verse begins, “For then must he often have suffered since
the foundation of the world:”. The
writer began with the word, “For then”
which means “even as, indeed, no doubt, seeing then, verily and
therefore” “must” which
means “it is necessary, it behooves and is right and proper”
“he often” or “Jesus
frequently would” “have suffered”
which means “have been affected, felt, been passionate about and
vexed” “since”
which means “the place where anything is, comes, befalls and
originates” “the foundation”
or “the deposition, founding and conception” “of the
world” which refers to “the
circle of earthly goods, endowments, riches, advantages and
pleasures”. If Jesus offered Himself on earth only, He would have
“suffered” many
times from the beginning of the “earth”.
The
verse continues, “but now once in the end of the world
has he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself”. The
writer added the word, “but” which
is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be
written takes precedence over what was just stated “now
once” which means “at this
present one time for all” “in the end”
or “at the completion, consummation and end” “of the
world” which means “the
unbroken age, perpetuity of time, eternity, period of time and age”
“has he appeared”
or “to make manifest or visible or known what has been hidden or
unknown, to manifest whether by words, deeds or in any other way”
“to put away”
which means “to abolish, dis-annul and reject” “sin”
or “to miss the mark, err, be mistaken, wander from the law of God
and violate God's law” “by the sacrifice”
which means “through the victim” “of himself”
which refers to “Jesus Himself. Jesus only had to “appear” one
time as a “sacrifice” in the heavenly tabernacle to “abolish”
sin.
When
we consider these words in Hebrews, we see how Jesus would have
“suffered” over and over again if He presented Himself in
the “earthly tabernacle” alone, but He offered Himself in the
“heavenly temple” one time and His offering “put away sin”.
Through His “sacrifice” we now have access to God because
our “sin” has been removed, and when we “trust in, rely upon
and cling to” Jesus, the penalty for our sin is paid and we will
live “eternally” with God.
Next
time the writer declares “it
is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
