The Second Replaces the First Hebrews 10:9

The writer of Hebrews declared that God did not “have pleasure” in “burnt offerings and sacrifices” because they could not “cleanse” and “purge” people from their “sins”. In chapter ten and verse nine of Hebrews the writer shares how God “takes away the first, that he may establish the second.” where we read:

Then said he, Lo, I come to do your will, O God.
He takes away the first, that he may establish the second.

The verse begins, “Then said he, Lo, I come to do your will, O God.”. The writer began with the words, “Then said he”, which means “at that time Jesus spoke, uttered, affirmed, maintained and declared” “Lo, I come” which means “behold and see that the Messiah has arrived and is present” “to do your will” or “to produce, construct, form and fashion God's wish, choice, inclination, desire and pleasure”, “O God” which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Jesus' purpose in coming to the earth was to “perform and accomplish” the “will of God”.

The verse goes on to say, “He takes away the first, that he may establish the second.”. The writer continued with the words, “He takes away” or “God removes, abolishes and abrogates” “the first”, which refers to “the first in time, place, rank, influence or honor” “that he may establish” or “God may cause to make stand, be put in place, set and establish” “the second” which refers to “the other of two”.

When we think through these words in Hebrews, we see how God “abolished” His “first covenant” when Jesus fulfilled the requirements for the “second one”. Jesus offered the perfect “sacrifice and offering” when He gave and presented Himself to the Heavenly Father by His death on the cross. Now all who will “believe in Him” shall be “saved” and live “eternally” with Him.

Next time the writer shares how “we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
