“Christ is
not entered into the holy places made with hands” which
were “figures of the true”
“holy place” “in
heaven” according to the
writer of Hebrews, and in chapter nine and verse twenty-five
of Hebrews the writer compares the
offering of the priests in the tabernacle with Jesus' offering as he
tells the manner in which Jesus “should offer himself”
where we read:
Nor yet
that he should offer himself often, as the high priest enters
into the
holy place every year with blood of others;
The
verse begins, “Nor yet that he should offer himself
often,...”. The writer began
with the words, “Nor”
which means “not so much as” “yet that” or
“in order that” “he should offer”
or “he should bring, lead or present” “himself”
which refers to “Jesus” “often”
which means “frequently”. Jesus did not have to “offer himself”
year after year like the “high priests”
in the earthly tabernacle did.
The
verse goes on to say, “...as the high priest enters into
the holy place every year with blood of others;”. The
writer continued with the words, “as the high priest”
or “just or even as the chief
of priests” “enters”
which means “goes, comes or arises”, “into the holy
place” or “in the reverend,
worthy of veneration, set apart place” “every year”
which means “down from, throughout, according to and toward once a
year” “with blood”
or “along with and besides bloodshed” “of others”
which refers to “of other men and strangers”. The “high priest”
entered the “holy place” every year with a “blood”
sacrifice for himself and on behalf of the other people.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we see how Jesus did not
have to “offer himself” every year with the “blood”
for himself and others even as “the high priests” did. He
only had to enter the “holy place” in heaven “once”
to remove the curse of sin upon people. “Sin”
separates from God, and Jesus sacrificed His own “blood” one
time to pay for our sins, and now we have access to know Him as
“Savior and Lord” simply by believing in His finished and
completed offering.
Next
time the writer shares how Jesus “appeared
to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
