The
writer of Hebrews declared, “faith is the substance of
things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”,
and by “faith”
“the elders obtained a good report”.
In chapter eleven and verse three of Hebrews, the writer
shares how “the worlds
were framed by the word of God” where we read:
Through
faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God,
so that
things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
The
verse begins, “Through
faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of
God,...”. The
writer began with the words, “Through
faith”
which means “by belief, assurance and fidelity” “we
understand”
or “the writer and his readers perceive with the mind, think upon,
heed, ponder and consider” “that
the worlds”
which refers to “the universe and all within it” “were
framed” or
“were rendered fit, sound and complete” “by
the word”
which refers to “the uttered, declared and spoken voice, speech and
discourse” “of God”
which means “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of
God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. According to
the writer of Hebrews, he and his readers believed God “spoke”
the “universe” into existence.
The
verse goes on to say, “...so that things which are seen
were not made of things which do appear ”. The
writer continued with the words, “so that things which”
or “in order that the objects
that” “are seen”
which means “are discerned, possessed of sight, looked and gazed
upon” “were not made”
or “did not become, come into existence, come to pass or happen”
“of things” which
refers to “objects” “which do appear”
or “are brought forth into the light, caused to shine and become
evident”. God did not create the world out of “things”
which are observable and openly “evident”.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we see the role of “faith”
in believing the “framing” of the world. God created the universe
out of nothing, and therefore no one could see the components which
He used. It takes “faith” to believe this, and though
others offer alternative ways the universe came into existence, God
“spoke”, and it was made. Jesus Christ, according to the apostle
John, was also there, “all things were made by him, and without
him was not anything made” (John 1:3). Those who have “faith”
that God Almighty and Jesus Christ were the forces behind creation
have no difficulties with the fact that Jesus Christ came to die for
their sins, was raised on the third day from the grave, lives to make
intercession for all who believe in Him and will provide “eternal
life” to them forever.
Next
time the writer shares how “Abel
offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
