According
to the writer of Hebrews, those who “willfully sin”
after having “knowledge of the truth”
should have “a certain fearful looking for of judgment
and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries”.
In chapter ten and verse twenty-eight of Hebrews the writer
shares about the
person “that despised Moses' law” where we read:
He that
despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
The
verse begins, “He
that despised Moses' law died without mercy...”.
The writer
began with the words, “He that
despised”
which means “the certain one who does away with, sets aside,
disregards, nullifies, makes void, frustrates, rejects, refuses and
slights” “Moses'”
whose name means “drawing out” and was “the legislator of the
Jewish people and in a certain sense the founder of the Jewish
religion who wrote the first five books of the Bible which are
commonly referred to as the Books of Moses” “law”
which refers to “the rule producing a state approved of God”
“died” or
“perished by means of something” “without
mercy” which
means “separate, apart and besides compassion, pity and heart
emotions and longings”. The person who “died”
in the state of “setting aside and disregarding” the “law
of Moses”
did so not having any “compassion, pity and heart emotions”
toward him.
The
verse continues, “...under two or three witnesses:”.
The writer added the words,
“under two” or
“with or alongside two in number” “or three”
which means “or three in number” “witnesses”
which refers to “ones who are spectators of anything”. When “two
or three” “witnesses” gave
testimony under the “law of Moses”
against a person, that person was subject to death.
When
we consider these words in Hebrews, we see how impactful having “two
or three witnesses” against a person could be. There were
provisions within the “law of Moses” for when “two or
three witnesses” brought charges against a person, that person
would be put to death. (See Deuteronomy 17:16 and 19:15). Jesus
Christ came into the world to “save people from their sins”
rather than condemn them, and when we align ourselves with God's plan
of salvation through Him, we have no need to fear what “two or
three witnesses” might say against us. Though there was reason
for woe from “two or three witnesses” on earth, the
witness of Jesus shall be greater than them all.
Next
time the writer asks “how
much sorer punishment, suppose you, shall he be thought worthy, who
has trodden under foot the Son of God”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
