There
is a “high priest over the house of God” according to the writer
of Hebrews, and in chapter ten and verse twenty-two of Hebrews
the writer shares about
“draw near with a true heart” where we read:
Let us
draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having
our
hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with
pure water.
The
verse begins, “Let us draw near with
a true heart in full assurance of faith,...”.
The writer
began with the words, “Let us draw
near” or
“Allow the writer of Hebrews and his readers come, approach and
assent” “with a true heart”
which means “alongside the center of all physical and spiritual
life in a manner that is opposite to what is fictitious, counterfeit,
imaginary, simulated or pretended” “in
full assurance” or
“in most certain and entire confidence” “of
faith” which
means “conviction of the truth with the predominate idea of trust
whether in God or in Christ which springs from faith in the same”.
Because the writer and his readers were given access to God, they
were to “approach” Him with “true
hearts”
which were “filled with conviction of the truth and trust in God”.
The verse continues,
“...having our hearts sprinkled from
an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.”. The
writer added the words, “having our
hearts sprinkled” which
is the Greek phrase “rhantizō
kardia rhantizō” which
means
“the center of all physical and spiritual life has been cleansed
and purified” “from an evil”
which means “out of , since and separated apart from a wicked and
bad ” “conscience”
or “the soul as distinguishing between what is morally good and bad
which prompts to do the former and shun the latter while commending
one and condemning the other”, “and
our bodies”
which refers to “the writer and his readers' living body or corpse”
“washed”
or “bathed and cleansed” “with
pure water”
which means “with clean and purified by fire water”. Those who
believe in Jesus' sacrifice for their sins have had their “evil
consciousness” and “bodies” “cleansed” with the “purified”
water from God.
When
we consider these words in Hebrews, we see the invitation by the
writer to simply “draw near” to God. Since we have access
to Him, we have no need to fear Him if we have received His Son Jesus
Christ as our “Savior and Lord”. The Lord Jesus has “cleansed
and purged” us from our “sins”, and we have the “full
assurance of faith” to make entry before God Almighty, and
those who are wise will do so.
Next
time the writer tells his readers to “hold
fast the profession of our faith”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
