According
to the writer of Hebrews, when the priests offered the “blood
of bulls and goats” and the
“ashes of an heifer sprinkling”
they “sanctified to the purifying of the flesh”,
and in chapter nine and verse fourteen of Hebrews the writer
shared about the importance of the
“the blood of Christ” where we read:
How much
more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit
offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead
works to serve the living God?
The
verse begins, “How much more shall the blood of Christ,
who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to
God,...”. The writer began
with the words, “How much more shall”
which means “how much greater and by far degree will” “the
blood” or “bloodshed” “of
Christ” which refers to “the
anointed Messiah and Son of God”, “who through”
which means “who throughout and by means of” “the
eternal” or “the without
beginning and end, never to cease and everlasting” “Spirit”
which refers to “third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit,
coequal, coeternal with the Father and the Son” “offered”
or “brought, lead in and put” “himself”
which refers to “Jesus' own self” “without spot”
or “without blemish, fault and blame” “to God”
which refers to “the Godhead
bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the
Son and the Holy Spirit”. The writer's question to his readers was
a comparison of earthly “blood”
and “ashes” of
animals being offered to God compared to the “spotless” “blood
of Christ” which by “the
Holy Spirit” was presented to
God.
The
verse goes on to say, “...purge your conscience from dead
works to serve the living God?”. The
writer continued with the word, “purge” or
“make clean and cleanse from stains and dirt” “your
conscience” which means “the
soul as distinguishing between what is morally good and bad,
prompting to do the former and shun the latter, commending one and
condemning the other” “from dead works”
or “away from lifeless, deceased, departed, without life and
inanimate business, employment and that with which anyone is
occupied” “to serve”
which means “to minister to, render religious service toward, give
homage to and worship” “the living” or
“full of vigor, fresh, strong and efficient” “God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”? When Jesus
Christ offered His “spotless” “blood”
as a sacrifice for sins, He was able to “cleanse” people from
“lifeless” activities toward ministering to the “strong and
efficient” Almighty God.
When
we consider these words in Hebrews, we see the superiority of “the
blood” of Jesus Christ over any other offering that came
before. The animal sacrifices were instituted by God for the
cleansing of the sins of man, however, when Jesus was sent to offer
Himself as a sacrifice, not only was it perfect, but it was also
complete. God Almighty so loves people and desires a relationship
with them, that He sent “His only begotten Son” as the
“spotless” offering to “cleanse” us from our sin. Now we need
only to “believe in Him” to receive the promise of
“everlasting life”. May all who read these words submit
themselves to Him.
Next
time the writer shares about “the
mediator of the new testament”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
