The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them, When you are bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honorable man than you be bidden of him. And he that bade you and him come and say to you, Give this man place; and you begin with shame to take the lowest room. But when you are bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade you comes, he may say unto you, Friend, go up higher: then shall you have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with you”, and in chapter fourteen and verse eleven of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “whosoever exalts himself shall be abased” where we read:
For whosoever exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.
The verse reads, “For whosoever exalts himself shall be abased;” Luke began with the words, “For whosoever” or “because, since and on account that the person whether male or female” “exalts himself” which means “lifts up, raises and honors their own self” “shall be abased” or “will be brought and made low, humbled and assigned to a lower rank or place”. Luke shared how Jesus said the person who “honors themself” will be “humbled and assigned to a lower place”.
The verse goes on to say, “and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.” Luke continued with the words, “and he that humbles himself” or “and the person who makes themselves lower in honor” “shall be exalted” which means “will be lifted up, raised and honored”. Luke shared how Jesus said people who “make themselves lower in honor” will be “lifted up”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn Jesus' directive concerning being “humble” and “exalted”. People who follow Jesus' example of “humility” will find themselves “exalted” both in this world and in the Kingdom of God, and those who make themselves “proud” in this world, will find themselves “humbled” by the Lord. God wants every person to be in a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and those who submit themselves to Him will be “exalted” far beyond any position the world may offer.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “when you make a dinner or a supper, call not your friends, brethren, kinsmen or rich neighbors”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
