Now Carry Purse and Scrip - Luke 22:36

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus asked His disciples, “When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked you any thing? And they said, Nothing”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse thirty-six of his book Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples, “he that has a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip” where we read:

Then said he unto them, But now, he that has a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip:

and he that has no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

The verse reads,Then said he unto them, But now, he that has a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip:” Luke began with the words, “then he said unto them or “at that time Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”, “but now” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover at this present time”, “he that that has a purse” or “Jesus' disciple who holds, owns or possesses a money bag”, “let him take it” which means “allow and permit that disciple to bear and carry it with him”, “and likewise his scrip” or “and in the same manner and likeness the disciple's wallet or leather sack in which travelers and shepherds carried their provisions”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed His disciples to bring their “money bag and leather sacks for provisions”.

The verse goes on to say, and he that has no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.” Luke continued with the words, “and he that has no sword” or “and the disciple of Jesus who does not hold, own or possess large knife or small curved or straight sword”, “let him sell his garment” which means “allow and permit that disciple to barter with his raiment, clothes, cloak, robe, vesture or outer apparel”, “and buy one” or “and purchase or redeem a sword”. Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples who did not own a “sword” to “sell” their outer garments and “purchase one”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus changed the provisions His disciples were to bring with them on this mission. Though in the past He instructed them not to carry these things, (See Matthew 10:10; Luke 9:3; Luke 10:4), they were now to bring these items along. Jesus demonstrated what God is like when He came to the earth, and He is not bound to any particular method or way within His Kingdom. The disciples of Jesus needed to learn He would protect and provide anything they needed, and this was to be the greatest test for them. God loves people, and He allowed His Son Jesus to come to the earth to pay the price for the sins of all mankind. Those who consider all He did and the different ways He did them should yield their lives to Him as their personal “Lord and Savior” and allow Him to alter their direction any time He deems it best.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “this that is written must yet be accomplished in me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
