Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus said, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith fail not: and when you are converted, strengthen your brethren. And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with you, both into prison, and to death. And he said, I tell you, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that you shall three times deny that you know me”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse thirty-five of his book Luke shared how Jesus asked His disciples, “When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked you any thing?” where we read:
And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked you any thing? And they said, Nothing.
The verse reads, “And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked you any thing?” Luke began with the words, “and he said unto them” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”, “when I sent you” which means “at the time and moment I, Jesus, ordered, dismissed and dispatched His disciples” “without purse” or “not having a money bag”, “and scrip” which means “and wallet which was a leather sack in which travelers and shepherds carried their provisions”, “and shoes” or “and sandals which were fastened to the foot with thongs”, “lacked you any thing” which means “did you disciples suffer want or were you devoid of in lack of any particular provision”? Luke shared how Jesus referred to when He sent them out without having provisions such as “money, a wallet or shoes”, and then asked them whether they experienced any “lack” while they were ministering.
The verse continues, “And they said, Nothing.” Luke added the words, “and they said” or “and Jesus' disciples uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “nothing” which means “not one thing”. Luke shared how the disciples of Jesus answered that they had “no want or lack” in anything at all when Jesus sent them out to minister.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus' reminds His disciples of when He sent them out without any “creature comforts” or physical provisions. He asked them whether they “lacked” anything during their ministry time. Their answer was, “not one thing”. Jesus will continue in this thought in our next verse, but for now let all who read these words know Jesus is willing to be the protector and provider for all who follow Him and minister in His Kingdom. God's only begotten Son Jesus loves people so greatly that He came to the world with “no thing”, and yet possessed all. Those who are wise will choose to follow Him and believe that He is able to forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “he that has a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
