Luke the beloved physician wrote, “Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse eight of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover” where we read:
And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.
The verse reads, “And he sent Peter and John, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he sent” or “and Jesus dispatched and dismissed” “Peter” which means “a little rock or stone and was one of Jesus' disciples” “and John” or “and John whose name means Jehovah is a gracious giver and was the son of Zebedee and Salome, brother of James the elder”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” to them the following words. Luke shared how Jesus dispatched His disciples “Peter and John” to carry out what He tells them next.
The verse goes on to say, “... Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.” Luke continued with the words, “go and prepare us” or “leave and depart on your journey and make necessary preparations and get everything ready for Jesus Himself and His disciples” “the passover” which means “the paschal sacrifice which was accustomed to be offered for the people's deliverance of old from Egypt”, “that we may eat” or “so Jesus and His disciples might consume and devour the passover meal”. Luke shared how Jesus told “Peter and John” to “make the necessary preparations” for He and His disciples to “eat” the “passover” meal.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus instructed His two disciples, “Peter and John”, to get everything ready for them to “eat” the “passover” meal. This “passover” would be extra special because it would be the last one Jesus would eat with His disciples before His death. The “sacrificial lamb” eaten at the “passover meal” was a type of Jesus who was to be the “lamb slain” for the sins of mankind. Anyone who carefully studies Jesus' deliberate actions for this “passover” and His own should understand that He is indeed the “Christ” and “lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”. (See John 1:29) Those who are wise will believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how Peter and James ask Jesus, “Where will you that we prepare?” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
