The Day of Unleavened Bread - Luke 22:7

The beloved physician Luke wrote, “then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse seven of his book Luke shared, “then came the day of unleavened bread” where we read:

Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.

The verse reads,Then came the day of unleavened bread, ...” Luke began with the words, “then came the day or “at that time arose and appeared the period of time” “of unleavened bread” which means “pertaining to the unfermented loaves used in the paschal feast of the Jews”. Luke shared how the time came for the “time” for the “unfermented loaves” to be used for the following.

The verse continues, “... when the passover must be killed.” Luke added the words, “when the passover” or “at the time and moment paschal sacrifice which was accustomed to be offered for the people's deliverance of old from Egypt” “must be killed” which means “was needed to be immolated, slain and sacrificed”. Luke shared how the time of “passover” had come when the “sacrificial” lamb was to be killed.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn the “day” of “passover” was come. The “unleavened bread” along with the sacrificial lamb was to be slaughtered, and the people would remember God's deliverance of the people of Israel from Egypt. This was all part of God's plan for Jesus to be the “sacrificial lamb” of God who would take away the sins of the world. All who put their faith and trust in Him will have their sins forgiven and inherit eternal life with God. “Behold, the lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world”. (See John 1:29)

Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
