The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that you enter not into temptation. And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, ...”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse forty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “Father, if you be willing, remove this cup from me” where we read:
Saying, Father, if you be willing, remove this cup from me:
nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done.
The verse reads, “Saying, Father, if you be willing, remove this cup from me:” Luke began with the word, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “Father” which refers to “Heavenly Father who is God”, “if you be willing” or “whether and perhaps you, Father God, are deliberately purposed, have in mind and desire to”, “remove this cup” which means “lead aside, carry off and take away this drinking vessel of adversity and unfavorable divine appointment” “from me” or “away and separated from me, Jesus”. Luke shared how Jesus asked His “Father” God to “take away” the “cup” of “adversity” which lie before Him.
The verse goes on to say, “nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done.” Luke continues with the words, “nevertheless not my will” or “besides and except not my, Jesus Himself's”, choice, inclination, pleasure or desire”, “but yours” which means “notwithstanding, rather, nay and indeed yours, Father God”, “be done” or “come into existence, happen, appear in public and be finished”. Luke shared how Jesus prayed that His Father God's “desire and pleasure” would be accomplished rather than His own.
When we Luke's words in this verse, we learn what Jesus “prayed” as He spoke to His Father God. He asked Him to “take away” the “cup” or “adversity” He was about to encounter, however, He yielded His own desire to His Father God. If there was any other way that mankind could be saved, Jesus would not have to endure the suffering and death that was ahead of Him, but there was not. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). There is no one else in all of history who was perfect and died for the sins of mankind, and when a person believes and trusts in Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they shall be forgiven of their sins and receive “everlasting life” with God. Let all who read these words give praise and glory to the only One who was willing to drink of the “cup” that Jesus was given.
Next time Luke shares how, “there appeared an angel unto him from heaven”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
