The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that you enter not into temptation. And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, Saying, Father, if you be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse forty-three of his book Luke shared how, “there appeared an angel unto him from heaven” where we read:
And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
The verse reads, “And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, ...” Luke began with the words, “and there appeared an angel unto him” or “and a messenger or envoy allowed himself to be seen by Jesus” “from heaven” which means “apart and separate from the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”. Luke shared how a “messenger or envoy” from “Heaven” came to Jesus as He was praying.
The verse continues, “... strengthening him.” Luke added the words, “strengthening” or “inspiriting or making strong” “him” which refers to “Jesus”. Luke shared how Jesus was “inspirited” by the “angel's” visit.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how an “angel” from “Heaven” was sent to minister to Jesus. Jesus was greatly weakened physically by the intensity of His prayer, and because He was going to give His life for the sins of the world, He was without strength. Jesus was suffering in His passionate supplication on behalf of mankind, and this made Him faint. God cared for His Son Jesus by dispatching an “angel” to help, and in the same manner God desires to help those who are made feeble by their agony in this world. Let all who consider God's care for His Son Jesus know that He also cares for them by sending His Son Jesus into the world to save them from their sins, and regardless of how “weak” He became, Jesus was purposed to die for the sins of mankind.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “being in an agony he prayed more earnestly”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
