Luke the beloved physician wrote, “Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. And they said unto him, Where will you that we prepare? And he said unto them, Behold, when you are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he enters in. And you shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master says unto you, Where is the guest-chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? And he shall show you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse fourteen of his book Luke shared what Jesus did, “when the hour was come” where we read:
And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.
The verse reads, “And when the hour was come, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when” or “at the time and moment”, “the hour was come” which means “the certain definite time arrived and came on the scene”. Luke shared at the specific “time” that the following was to occur, Jesus did the following.
The verse goes on to say, “... he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.” Luke continued with the words, “he sat down” or “Jesus lie or sat back and reclined”, “and the twelve apostles ” which means “and the twelve disciples, delegates, messengers and ones sent forth with orders” “with him” or “alongside Jesus”. Luke shared how Jesus “reclined” alongside His “twelve disciples” who had previously been sent out to share the gospel of the Kingdom of God.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we understand there was a specific time for this “passover meal” to be eaten by Jesus and His disciples. Jesus and His “disciples”, now called “apostles”, were reclining together to partake of the “paschal sacrifice”. God's plan for the salvation of man was coming together, and Jesus was obeying every aspect of His Father's way. Jesus deliberately reclined with His disciples as this was to be His last meal with them, and the symbolism in this “passover” would become extremely important for them afterward. God loves people, and His willingness to have His Son Jesus go through this process should have every person carefully considering Him and the “salvation” He offers to every person for all eternity.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “with desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
