Luke the beloved physician wrote, “Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. And they said unto him, Where will you that we prepare? And he said unto them, Behold, when you are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he enters in. And you shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master says unto you, Where is the guest-chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? And he shall show you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse fifteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “with desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer” where we read:
And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:
The verse reads, “And he said unto them, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he said” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” which means “to His disciples” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus began to speak to His disciples.
The verse continues, “... With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:” Luke added the words, “with desire” or “with craving and longing” “I have desired to eat” which means “I, Jesus, have coveted and longed for” “this passover with you” or “this particular paschal sacrifice which was accustomed to be offered for the people's deliverance of old from Egypt” “before I suffer” which means “in advance and prior to Jesus' being vexed, being put in a bad plight and experiencing painful passion”. Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples He “craved and longed” to eat this particular “passover” with them because this one would be just prior to His “suffering”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus knew His fate. This was to be His last “passover” with His disciples before His time of “suffering”, and although they had no idea what He was about to endure, He was to prepare them in advance. God had a plan for the salvation of mankind through His Son Jesus, and each step along the way was significant. Jesus spent this “passover” with His disciples because He was going to “suffer” for all mankind, and those who are wise will carefully consider all Jesus endured so they might live with God for all eternity.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
