To the Mount of Olives - Luke 22:39

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus asked His disciples, “When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked you any thing? And they said, Nothing. Then said he unto them, But now, he that has a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that has no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse thirty-nine of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives” where we read:

And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives;

and his disciples also followed him.

The verse reads,And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives;” Luke began with the words, “And he came out or “and Jesus left and departed”, “and went” which means “and journeyed and traveled”, “as he was wont” or “in the usage, manner and custom” “to the mount of Olives” which refers to “toward the rising above the plain or hill named Olives because there were olive trees there”. Luke shared how Jesus left the place where He and His disciples were and traveled toward the “Mount of Olives” which was His custom.

The verse continues, and his disciples also followed him.” Luke added the words, “and his disciples” or “and Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “also followed him” which means “even so and indeed went after, accompanied and joined Jesus as attendants”. Luke shared how Jesus' “disciples” “followed” Him to the “Mount of Olives”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus purposed to go to the “Mount of Olives” in the same manner as He was accustomed, and His disciples “followed” after Him. Jesus was on mission, and this would be a crucial part of the suffering and dying He was to face on behalf of mankind. Sin dominated people, and they needed a “Savior” so they could live forever with God. Paul the apostle wrote, For he has made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (See 2 Corinthians 5:21), and when Jesus went to the “Mount of Olives”, He was preparing to pay the ultimate price so His “righteousness” would be appropriated to all who believe and trust in Him. Let all who consider Jesus' “custom” of going to the “Mount of Olives” yield to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “pray that you enter not into temptation”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
