The apostle John wrote how Jesus washed His disciples' feet, and told them “you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him”, and in chapter thirteen and verse seventeen of his book John shared how Jesus told His disciples, “if you know these things, happy are you” where we read:
If you know these things, happy are you if you do them.
The verse reads, “If you know these things, ...” John began with the words, “If you know” which means “whether you, disciples of Jesus, understand, perceive, discover and discern” “these things” or “the things concerning servants not being greater than their lords nor those who are sent being greater than the ones who sent them”. John shared how Jesus presented the condition of whether His disciples would “understand” what He was saying to them.
The verse goes on to say, “... happy are you if you do them.” John continued with the words, “happy are you” which means “blessed, fortunate and well off do you, disciples of Jesus, exist” “if you do them” or “in case you, disciples of Jesus, perform, make ready and produce the things Jesus told them”. John shared how Jesus said His disciples would be “blessed” if they observed and performed what He told them to do.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus told His disciples they would be “blessed” not only if they “knew” what He was saying, but also “performed” what He said. Jesus “served” His disciples by washing their feet, and therein He provided an example to them for how they were to “serve” one another. When they “served” one another, the disciples of Jesus would benefit in their own lives. God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. When they surrender their life to Him, He forgives their sins, grants them everlasting life and begins to use them in His Kingdom to “serve” other people. Let all who read these words yield to Jesus and “serve” others in the world.
Next time John shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
