The Dipping of the Sop - John 13:26

The apostle John wrote how Jesus, was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spoke. Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spoke. He then lying on Jesus' breast said unto him, Lord, who is it?”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twenty-six of his book John shared how Jesus answered , “He it is, to whom I shall give a sop” where we read:

Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it.

And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

The verse reads, “Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. John began with the words, “Jesus answered” which means “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation responded and began to speak”, “He it is” or “the disciples who would betray Jesus exists as the one”, “to whom I shall give” which means “who I, Jesus, will furnish and supply” “a sop” or “a fragment, bit or morsel”, “when I have dipped it” which means “at the time and moment I, Jesus, immerse the fragment, bit or morsel”. John shared how Jesus responded to John the apostle's question by saying the disciple who would “betray” Him was the one to whom He “furnished and supplied” a “bit or morsel” after He immersed it.

The verse continues, “And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.” John added the words, “and when he had dipped the sop” which means “and at the time and moment Jesus immersed the morsel ”, “he gave it to Judas Iscariot” or “Jesus furnished and supplied the dipped morsel to Judas which means he shall be praised and was from the men of Kerioth”, “the son of Simon” which means “the male offspring and progeny of Simon whose name means a little stone”. John shared how Jesus “immersed” the “morsel”, “dipped” it and supplied it to His disciple named “Judas Iscariot” who was “Simon's son”.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus told him which of His disciples would “betray” Him. Jesus told John He would give a “dipped morsel” to the one who would deliver Him over to the authorities, and He gave it to “Judas”. Jesus came to the earth to die on the cross for the sins of the world, and anyone who yields their life to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins because of His sacrifice. “Judas” betrayed Jesus, however, Jesus not only knew who would “deliver” Him over to the authorities, but also carried out God's plan to provide “salvation” to all mankind.

Next time John shares concerning Judas, “and after the sop Satan entered into him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
