The apostle John wrote how Jesus, “was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spoke”, and in chapter thirteen and verse twenty-three of his book John shared how, “there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved” where we read:
Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
The verse reads, “Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, ...” John began with the words, “now there was leaning” which means “moreover there existed one reclining” “on Jesus' bosom” or “upon the upper or forepart of the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “one of his disciples” which means “a particular and certain one of Jesus' students, pupils and attendants”. John shared how a particular “student and pupil” of Jesus was reclining upon His chest as they ate their meal together.
The verse continues, “... whom Jesus loved.” John added the words, “whom Jesus” which means “who the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “loved” or “was fond of, loved dearly and with whom Jesus was well pleased and contented”. John shared how Jesus was “well pleased with and dearly loved” this “disciple” who lay upon His chest.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we see how he described this “dearly loved” “disciple” of Jesus as special because He was close enough to Him to lie upon His chest. This disciple was John the apostle himself who was very close to Jesus. It is interesting that John points out how Jesus “loved him dearly” even as the other disciples surrounded Jesus as well. It is certain, as we shall see in a future chapter, that John had a special place with Jesus because He left His mother to John's care. (See John 19:26-27). Jesus loves everyone, and God sent Him into the world to die on the cross for the sins of every person. Anyone who believes and trusts in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be “saved” from the penalty for sins, death, and be granted everlasting life with God. Jesus desires to have a “dearly loved” relationship with everyone, and those who are wise will “lean in” close to Him and receive Him today.
Next time John shares how, “Simon Peter” asks John to find out “of whom” Jesus “spoke”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
