A Handful of Corn - Psalms 72:16

In Psalms chapter seventy-two David said of the royal ruler, “He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight. And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be praised”, and in chapter seventy-two and verse sixteen of Psalms David said, “there shall be an handful of corn in the earth” where we read,

There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains;

the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.

The verse begins, There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; David began with the words, “there shall be an handful of corn” or “there will exist an abundance, fullness and plenty of grain or wheat” “in the earth” which means “within the land, country, territory, region or world” “upon the top of the mountains” or “on the summit, upper part and chief height belonging to the range of hills or hill country”. David shared how there would be an abundance of grain within the land and on the summit of the range of hills.

The verse goes on to say,the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth. David continued with the words, “the fruit thereof” or “the bough, produce or fruitful reward” “shall shake like Lebanon” which means “will move, quake and tremble similar and in likeness to Lebanon whose name means whiteness and was a wooded mountain range on the northern border of Israel”: “and they of the city” or “and the people belonging to the town, encampment and place of living” “shall flourish like grass” which means “will bloom, shine, sparkle and gleams similar to herbs or green plants” “of the earth” or “belonging to the land, country, territory, district and world”. David said the abundance of “fruit” would make “Lebanon” tremble and the people within the dwelling place increase like the widespread herbage upon the country and land.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the produce and bough of the country of the royal ruler would be in abundance and fill the countryside and mountains. “Lebanon” would be so full of fruitful vegetation that it would tremble for the abundance. In other words, the land of the royal ruler would be blessed. Habakkuk the prophet wrote, “For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea” (See Habakkuk 2:14), and so shall it be as God's blessing will be upon anyone who yields themselves to His Son Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”. He shall forgive their sins, grant them everlasting life and fill them with abundance of spiritual “fruit” and “grain” within their lives.

Next time David says, “His name shall endure for ever”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
