In Psalms chapter seventy-three Asaph said, “I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. Therefore pride compasses them about as a chain; violence covers them as a garment. Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish. They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily. They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walks through the earth”, and in chapter seventy-three and verse ten of Psalms Asaph said, “therefore his people return here” where we read,
Therefore his people return here: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.
The verse begins, “Therefore his people return here:” Asaph began with the words, “therefore his people” or “thus, then, forasmuch and this being so the men and women who follow the foolish and wicked people” “return here” which means “come back to where the foolish and wicked were located”. Asaph said because of the overconfident behavior of the foolish and wicked people, others come to where they are.
The verse continues, “and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.” Asaph added the words, “and waters of a full cup” or “and flowing words like abundant waters” “are wrung out to them” which means “are drained, squeezed and poured out to the people who assemble”. Asaph said the foolish and wicked people pour out their words to the people who gather unto them.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Asaph how people actually gather themselves to the foolish and wicked people. This is common as “success in evil ways” without consequences appears to have a desirable outcome, and therefore other people want to hear the teaching of those who have great gain. There is an eternal problem with this line of thinking. Everyone will give an account of what they have done in their bodies, (See Romans 14:12) and although it may appear for a time that they get away with their evil, God knows. God is always aware of what we do, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our errors and wrongs. When we rely upon, trust in and cling to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Lest we fall into the group of people who gather around foolish and wicked people and their words, let us turn to the Lord Jesus and follow what He has to say.
Next time Asaph shares how the people ask, “how does God know?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
