Setting Their Mouth Against the Heavens - Psalms 73:9

In Psalms chapter seventy-three Asaph said, “I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. Therefore pride compasses them about as a chain; violence covers them as a garment. Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish. They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily”, and in chapter seventy-three and verse nine of Psalms Asaph said, they set their mouth against the heavenswhere we read,

They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walks through the earth.

The verse begins, They set their mouth against the heavens, ... Asaph began with the words, “they set their mouth” or “they, the foolish and wicked people, appoint, place and array the orifice in their faces used for drinking, eating and speaking” “against the heavens” which means “in opposition to the visible sky, abode of the stars, universe and atmosphere”. Asaph said the foolish and wicked appoint their “mouths” in opposition to the visible sky, universe and atmosphere.

The verse goes on to say,... and their tongue walks through the earth. Asaph continued with the words, “and their tongue walks” or “and the wedge in the mouths of the foolish and wicked ambles and proceeds” “through the earth” which means “throughout the land, country, territory, region and world”. Asaph said the foolish and wicked use the “tongues” in their mouths to make their way through the entire world.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how Asaph noted the way the foolish and wicked employ their “mouths” and “tongues” to proceed through the world. They spoke against God's “heavens” above and they made their way through life by the use of their boastful words. Jesus said, “every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment” (See Matthew 12:36), and it is certain those who are opposed to Jehovah God and His Son Jesus will give an account for their boastful and arrogant words. God loves people, and even though they have sin in their lives, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, including our ignorant and boastful words, and grant us everlasting life with Him. Today is the day of salvation, but should we refuse and reject Jesus, every word we speak will be brought into account before the throne of Almighty Jehovah God.

Next time Asaph says, therefore his people return here, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
