Lifting Up Axes - Psalms 74:5

In Psalms chapter seventy-four Asaph said to Jehovah God, “Lift up your feet unto the perpetual desolations; even all that the enemy has done wickedly in the sanctuary. Your enemies roar in the midst of your congregations; they set up their ensigns for signs”, and in chapter seventy-four and verse five of Psalms Asaph shared about a man, as he had lifted up axes” where we read,

A man was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees.

The verse begins, A man was famous ...” Asaph began with the words, “a man” or “a male human being” “was famous” which means “existed as known, perceived, discriminated, recognized and acknowledged”. Asaph referred to a male human being who was well known.

The verse continues, “... according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees.” Asaph added the words, “according as he had lifted up axes” or “because the famous man raised a cutting axe” “upon the thick trees” which means “on the thicket of timbers, woods, planks, stalks and woody flax”. Asaph said the man with the axed raised it upon the woods and thicket of timbers.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn about a man wielding an axe who became a woodcutter to the thickets of trees. This may seem at first glance out of place, but we shall see how Asaph uses this man as an example of the bold assault of the “enemies” of Jehovah God. Many people who oppose God and His ways attempt to assault Him and His people, but we know God is well aware of their tactics, and He will certainly subdue all opposing foes. God loves people, and He offers all of us salvation from our sins when we believe and trust in His Son Jesus who came into the world to die for our sins. Forgiveness is available to us when we surrender to Him, and the promise of a resurrection is ours when we yield. Let us acknowledge the hating foes of God who rise up like woodcutters with axes, but shall meet the eternal God who will judge them for their deeds.

Next time Asaph shares how, they break down the carved work, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
