In Psalms chapter seventy-three Asaph said, “I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked”, and because they seem to prosper Asaph said, “I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency”, and in chapter seventy-three and verse fourteen of Psalms Asaph said, “all the day long have I been plagued” where we read,
For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.
The verse begins, “For all the day long have I been plagued, ...” Asaph began with the words, “for all the day long” or “because, since and on account that each, every, the whole and everyone of the sunrises to sunsets” “have I been plagued” which means “I, Asaph, existed as stricken, punished, destroyed and defeated”. Asaph said all throughout the daytime he was troubled, stricken and destroyed.
The verse continues, “... and chastened every morning.” Asaph added the words, “and chastened” or “and rebuked, corrected, reproved and chastised” “every morning” which means “each and all dawns and risings of the sun”. Asaph said he was rebuked and corrected in each rising of the sun.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Asaph was affected physically and spiritually because of the trouble he endured through the prosperity of the wicked. Asaph attempted to do good and keep his soul in tact, but the results of his efforts was being stricken, punished and chastised. The idea is “no fair”. Asaph attempted to understand why he was afflicted when he did what was right, and foolish and wicked people prospered and grew in their wealth and ability. We shall see how Asaph comes to an understanding of his difficulties in our next few verses, but for now let us keep in mind that God was and is aware of every action, both good and evil, that people perform. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and right every wrong people commit in this world.
Next time Asaph says, “If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
