In Psalms chapter seventy-four Asaph said of Jehovah God, “deliver not the soul of your turtledove unto the multitude of the wicked: forget not the congregation of your poor for ever. Have respect unto the covenant: for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty”, and in chapter seventy-four and verse twenty-one of Psalms Asaph said, “let not the oppressed return ashamed” where we read,
O let not the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor and needy praise your name.
The verse begins, “O let not the oppressed return ashamed:” Asaph began with the words, “O let not the oppressed” or “O do not in any way allow and permit the crushed, injured and afflicted to” “return ashamed” which means “come back and restored as insulted, shamed, humiliated, reproached and confused”. Asaph beckoned Jehovah God not to allow the injured and afflicted to be restored in an insulted and shameful manner.
The verse continues, “let the poor and needy praise your name.” Asaph added the words, “let the poor” or “allow and permit the afflicted, humble, wretched and weak” “and needy” which means “and subject to oppression, abuse, troubled and destitute” “praise your name” or “shine, boast, commend and give glory to your, Jehovah God's, fame, reputation and glory”. Asaph appealed to Jehovah God to allow the afflicted, weak, troubled and destitute to glorify and commend His reputation, fame and glory.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Asaph did not want Jehovah God to allow the injured and afflicted to come back in a humiliated and confused manner, and he desired that the oppressed, abused and destitute to give glory and honor to His “name”. God was aware of all the people who were oppressed and needy, and they had an opportunity to worship Him. God wants everyone to believe and trust in Him through His Son Jesus, and when we surrender our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to give Him honor and praise for all eternity.
Next time Asaph says, “Arise, O God, plead your own cause”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
