In Psalms chapter seventy-four Asaph shared how, “A man was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees. But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers. They have cast fire into your sanctuary, they have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of your name to the ground”, and in chapter seventy-four and verse eight of Psalms Asaph said, “they said in their hearts, let us destroy them together” where we read,
They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together:
they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land.
The verse begins, “They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together:” Asaph began with the words, “they said in their hearts” or “they, the enemies of God, uttered, declared and proclaimed within their own inner man, soul, mind, will, desire, living being and seat of emotions and passions”, “let us destroy them together” which means “allow and permit us, Jehovah God, Asaph and his people, to oppress, suppress and maltreat them, the hating foes and adversaries of God”. Asaph shared how the enemies of God utter, declare and take counsel and plan within their souls and minds to oppress and suppress the people who belong to Jehovah God.
The verse goes on to say, “they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land.” Asaph continued with the words, “they have burned up” or “they, the enemies of God, have set on fire and kindled” “all the synagogues of God” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the sacred, holy and hallowed locations belonging to the Divine judge Jehovah God” “in the land” or “within the earth, country, territory, district and region”. Asaph said the enemies of Jehovah God have set on fire every one of the sacred and holy places within the country and region which belongs to God.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see how Asaph said the enemies of God declare within their souls and minds that they will bring destruction to the people of God. He said they set on fire the sacred and holy places within the country which belongs to God. In other words, the hating foes of God want to rid themselves of Him, His people and any sacred place where He is worshiped. There are people who want to eliminate God from the thoughts of anyone, and all the while God continues to extend His invitation to them to receive His Son Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”. He sent Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and assure us that He will contend with His enemies and destroy their efforts to do away with Him.
