In Psalms chapter seventy-four Asaph said of Jehovah God, “The day is yours, the night also is yours: you have prepared the light and the sun. You have set all the borders of the earth: you have made summer and winter”, and in chapter seventy-four and verse eighteen of Psalms Asaph said, “remember this, that the enemy has reproached, O LORD” where we read,
Remember this, that the enemy has reproached, O LORD,
and that the foolish people have blasphemed your name.
The verse begins, “Remember this, that the enemy has reproached, O LORD, ...” Asaph began with the words, “remember this” or “recall and call to mind what is about to be stated”, “that the enemy has reproached” which means “that the hating foe and adversary has taunted, blasphemed, defied, railed and upbraided”, “O LORD” or “O Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. Asaph appealed to Jehovah God to be reminded that the hating foe has taunted, blasphemed and railed upon them.
The verse goes on to say, “... and that the foolish people have blasphemed your name.” Asaph continued with the words, “and that the foolish people” or “and that the senseless, vile, stupid and wicked nation of people” “has blasphemed your name” which means “have spurned, contemned, despised and abhorred your, Jehovah God's, fame, reputation and glory”. Asaph shared how the senseless and vile people of the nation spurned and abhorred Jehovah God's fame, reputation and glory.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how Asaph desired that Jehovah God call to mind His hating foes and adversaries because senseless and wicked people spurned and abhorred His “reputation”. Asaph wanted God to act against those who opposed Him, however, God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. God sent Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we submit our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and assure us that He has those who hate Him not only in mind, but also within His timing for dealing with them.
Next time Asaph says, “deliver not the soul of your turtledove unto the multitude of the wicked”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
