When the Lord Awakes - Psalms 73:20

In Psalms chapter seventy-three Asaph said, “I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked”, and because they seem to prosper Asaph said, “How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors”, and in chapter seventy-three and verse twenty of Psalms Asaph said, O Lord, when you awake, you shall despise their imagewhere we read,

As a dream when one awakes; so, O Lord, when you awake, you shall despise their image.

The verse begins, As a dream when one awakes; Asaph began with the words, “as a dream” or “similar and in likeness to an ordinary or prophetic meaning dream” “when one awakes” which means “at the time and moment a person arouses, wakes up or shows signs of waking”. Asaph shared how the sudden consumption of the foolish and wicked people was like waking up from an ordinary or prophetic dream.

The verse continues,so, O Lord, when you awake, you shall despise their image. Asaph added the words, “so, O Lord” or “therefore, then and these things being true O Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God”, “when you awake” which means “at the time and moment you, Divine judge Jehovah God, arouse, wake up and show signs of waking”, “you shall despise their image” or “you, Divine judge Jehovah God, will hold in contempt, disdain and make despicable, vile and worthless their, the foolish and wicked people's, likeness, semblance and resemblance”. Asaph shared how the Divine judge Jehovah God would arouse and hold in contempt the likeness and resemblance of the foolish and wicked people.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how Asaph understood that Jehovah God would arise and contend with the foolish and wicked people. God is not blind nor deaf to the evil ways of people, and He is aware that all people have sinned and come short of the gory of God. (See Romans 3:23) He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and bring us to the understanding that His delays are not absence of knowledge or consent to sin. He will judge. He will contend, and we are wise to surrender ourselves to Him before He rises up to disdain.

Next time Asaph says, thus my heart was grieved, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
