In Psalms chapter seventy-five Asaph said, “promotion comes neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he puts down one, and sets up another”, and in chapter seventy-five and verse eight of Psalms Asaph said, “in the hand of the LORD there is a cup” where we read,
For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he pours out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them.
The verse begins, “For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red;” Asaph began with the words, “for in the hand of the LORD” or “because, since and on account that within the hand of authority and power belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “there is a cup” which means “there exists a container or cup like cavity”, “and the wine is red” or “and the effervescent or fermented wine is foaming and mixed with spices”. Asaph said within Jehovah God's right hand of authority there exists a container of effervescent foaming wine that is mixed with spices.
The verse continues, “and he pours out of the same:” Asaph added the words, “and he pours out” or “and he, Jehovah God, allows to flow, runs, trickles and melts” “of the same” which means “pertaining to the selfsame red wine in the container”. Asaph shared how Jehovah God allows the red wine in His cup to flow forth.
Finally the verse says, “but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them.” Asaph continued with the words, “but the dregs thereof” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the lees and settlings within the cup of Jehovah”, “all the wicked” which means “each and everyone of the criminal, guilty of crime, ungodly and hostile to God” “of the earth” or “belonging to the country, territory, region and world” “shall wring them out” which means “will drain, squeeze and suck out the dregs”, “and drink them” or “and imbibe the dregs”. Asaph said the settlings within God's container of wine would be drained and squeezed out by evil people, and they would imbibe them.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Asaph about Jehovah God's “cup” of red wine which represents His wrath. Although it appeared for a time that Jehovah God was unaware and aloof concerning His hating foes, all the while His wrath was being reserved. God will avenge Himself from those who hate Him, however, He offers salvation and deliverance through His Son Jesus whom He sent to the earth to die on the cross for the sins of the whole world. When we believe and trust in Jesus as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and assure us that His wrath will be poured out upon His hating foes and adversaries according to His timing and purpose.
Next time Asaph says, “I will sing praises to the God of Jacob”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
