In Psalms chapter seventy-eight Asaph said, “I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old, which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, showing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he has done”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse five of Psalms Asaph shared how Jehovah God, “established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel” where we read,
For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel,
which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:
The verse begins, “For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, , ...” Asaph began with the words, “for he established a testimony” or “because, since and on account that he, Jehovah God, maintained, confirmed and fixed a witness” “in Jacob” which means “within Jacob whose name means heel-holder or supplanter and was the son of Isaac, grandson of Abraham, and father of the twelve patriarchs of the tribes of Israel”, “and appointed a law” or “and put, set, placed, ordained and constituted instruction, direction and codes of customs and manners” “in Israel” which means “within Israel whose name means God prevails and was the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob”. Asaph said Jehovah God confirmed a witness within the nation descended from “Jacob” and ordained His law within “Israel”.
The verse continues, “... which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:” Asaph added the words, “which he commanded our fathers” or “that he, Jehovah God, ordered, gave charge unto and commissioned toward our, Asaph and his fellow countrymen's, forefathers, ancestors and progenitors”, “that they should make them known” which means “so they, the forefathers of Asaph and his fellow countrymen, ought and were obligated to fashion perception, understanding and discernment concerning God's witness and law” “to their children” or “toward their, the descendants of Jacob and Israel's, offspring and progeny”. Asaph referred to the witness and law of Jehovah God that was commissioned to the forefathers of Jacob and Israel, and they were to teach and give instruction to their offspring concerning them.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how God purposed to bear witness of Himself and to provide His “law” to the people of Jacob and Israel. God desires to be known, and He has given us His scriptures to reveal Himself to all who read them. John the apostle wrote, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (See John 3:16), and when we surrender our lives to Him, we will be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and enjoy His witness and commands which are meant for our good all the days of our life. (See Romans 8:28)
Next time Asaph shares these things so, “the generation to come might know them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
