Psalms chapter seventy-eight begins with the heading, “[[Maschil of Asaph.]]” which breaks down, “Maschil” or “a poem or song of contemplation” “of Asaph” which means “belonging to Asaph whose name means gatherer and was a son of Berechiah and the chief Levite musician under David”, and in chapter seventy-eight and verse one of Psalms Asaph said, “Give ear, O my people, to my law” where we read,
Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
The verse begins, “Give ear, O my people, to my law:” Asaph began with the words, “Give ear” or “hearken and listen”, “O my people” which means “O my, Jehovah God's, human beings both male and female”, “to my law” or “to my, Jehovah God's, direction, instruction and body of prophetic teaching”. Asaph shared how Jehovah God instructed His “people” to listen to and obey His directives, codes and manner for living.
The verse continues, “incline your ears to the words of my mouth.” Asaph added the words, “incline your ears” or “stretch out, extend and bend your, the people of God's, physical ears used to give audience, hearing, perceiving and understanding” “to the words” which means “toward the utterances, speeches, sayings, promises and commands” “of my mouth” or “belonging to my, Jehovah God's, orifice in the face used for drinking, eating and speaking”. Asaph continued to share Jehovah God's instruction as He told His people to bend their ears toward the utterances, speeches and commands coming from His “mouth”.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Jehovah God involved Himself in the lives of His people. God wants people to listen to and obey His “law”, and He desires that they “bend their ears” toward what He has to say. God always has the best in mind for anyone who will surrender their life to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. He sent Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross and resurrected three days later so people could be forgiven of the times they violate the law of God. When we believe and trust in Him, He will grant us everlasting life. God loves us, and we can do no better than to hear and obey God's law and listen to whatever He reveals to us when He speaks.
Next time Asaph says, “I will open my mouth in a parable”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
